Oakland, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Oakland Athletics have agreed to terms with pitchers Brandon McCarthy and Joey Devine on one-year contracts for the 2012 season. McCarthy had the best season of his career with the A's last year, going 9-9 in 25 starts with a 3.32 earned run average. He set career highs in wins (9) innings pitched (170 2/3), strikeouts (123) and complete games (5).

 

Devine, a first round pick in 2005 by the Atlanta Braves, saw his first action in two years after returning from "Tommy John" surgery. In 26 games with Oakland in 2011, he held a record of 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA.

 

Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Boston Red Sox and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury have avoided arbitration, agreeing to a contract for the 2012 season. Ellsbury is coming off a bounce-back season after injuries limited him to 18 games in 2010.

 

Boston also avoided arbitration with Mike Aviles, signing the infielder to a one-year contract. Aviles batted .255 with seven home runs and 39 RBI in 91 combined games with Kansas City and the Red Sox last season.

The 29-year-old O'Day was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 16 relief appearances for Texas in 2011.

 

Eveland, 28, went 3-2 with a 3.03 ERA in five starts for the Dodgers last season.

 

Clippard made 72 relief appearances for the Nationals in 2011, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.83 ERA. He had 104 strikeouts over 88 1/3 innings and made his first All-Star appearance.

 

Martinez, 33, batted .330 with 40 doubles, 12 home runs and 103 RBI in 145 games last season, his first with the Tigers.

Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East. Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year.No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. Maybe Chicago finds its way to .500... but then again, maybe it doesn't. If Favre comes back, Cutler might be the worst quarterback in this division this year.

Detroit Lions (+1500) - The Lions are probably once again going to be the whipping boys for the rest of the teams in the NFC North, but they aren't just going to roll over and die once again. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.
