11/23/2007 - College Station, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Stephen McGee threw three touchdowns as Texas A&M took out 13th-ranked Texas, 38-30, in a Big 12 battle at Kyle Field.
After the game, in a surprise announcement, Aggies coach Dennis Franchione announced his resignation after five years coaching the team.
"I've always said that coaches exist for only one reason - the players," Franchione said in a statement. "We have an outstanding group of young men on this team and especially great people. We want them to know that we love them, feel blessed for our time together, and will miss them."
The school announced Franchione accepted a buyout of his contract, which ran through 2012. Franchione will not coach a future bowl game with the Aggies, but no interim coach was named.
McGee went 25-for-36 with a career-high 362 yards and two picks and added a rushing touchdown, while Mike Goodson had 82 yards receiving with two scores and added 72 rushing yards for the Aggies (7-5, 4-4 Big 12), who stopped a three-game losing streak.
Colt McCoy went 17-for-32 for 229 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Longhorns (9-3, 5-3), who had a five-game winning streak snapped. The Longhorns could still win the Big 12 South, but those hopes could be dashed Saturday if Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State.
Texas made it a 17-10 game in the third quarter due in large part to a turnover. Brandon Foster stepped in front of a McGee pass and returned it 38 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the A&M eight-yard line. On the next play, Jamaal Charles took the ball around the right end and into the end zone with 10:46 left in the third.
A McCoy fumble resulted in the Aggies getting the ball near midfield and the team took advantage. Six consecutive rushing plays were capped when McGee took the ball into the end zone from six yards out for a 24-10 lead.
However, Quan Cosby returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards into the end zone to make it a one-score contest with 36 seconds left in the third quarter.
That was as close as Texas got, though, as A&M scored on consecutive drives to turn the game into a rout.
Just two plays after getting the ball back, McGee hit Goodson near the right sideline, the receiver cut back into the middle and raced into the end zone from 44 yards out for a 31-17 lead nine seconds into the fourth quarter.
After holding the Longhorns to a three-and-out, the Aggies made it a 38-17 game as McGee connected with Earvin Taylor over the middle near midfield and Taylor took it into the end zone for a 66-yard score with 11:39 left in the game.
Texas, though, didn't quit and responded with two scores to make it an eight- point game.
A nine-play, 80-yard drive was completed when McCoy and Jordan Shipley connected for a 28-yard score to make it a 38-24 game with 7:36 left in the contest.
After holding the Aggies to a three-and-out, Texas got the ball back with under five minutes to play and a 12-play, 73-yard drive was capped off on a four-yard touchdown run by Chris Ogbonnaya. The extra-point attempt, though, failed and Texas trailed, 38-30, with 2:45 left in the contest.
Texas lined up for the onsides kick, but was unable to get it and A&M ran out the clock to hold on for the win.
The Aggies started the game with the ball, drove down the field and in six plays went 66 yards and scored when McGee found Goodson in the end zone from 35 yards out for a 7-0 lead just 3:22 in.
Later in the first quarter, A&M got the ball back at its own 17. The team used a 16-play drive that ate up over five minutes of the clock to take a 10-0 lead on a 31-yard field goal from Matt Szymanski with just 39 ticks left on the clock in the opening quarter.
The Aggies kept up the pressure and made it a 17-0 game with just 2:55 to play in the first half. On 4th-and-3 at the Texas five-yard line, the Aggies lined up for a field goal, but holder T.J. Sanders took the ball himself and ran into the end zone to cap the 11-play, 95-yard drive that took 6:23 off the clock.
The Longhorns finally got their offense on track on the ensuing possession. McCoy started the drive with a 62-yard catch-and-run by Charles to get the ball to the A&M 18. However, the drive stalled and a 27-yard field goal from Ryan Bailey with 12 seconds left made it a 17-3 game going into the locker room.
Game Notes
Taylor finished the game with 113 yards on seven receptions...Charles carried the ball 17 times for 92 yards and had four catches for 81 yards...The Longhorns hold a 73-36-5 lead over the Aggies in the all-time series between the rivals, but Texas A&M has won the last two.
