D-Train tries to get back on track as Marlins host Braves

Baseball Betting Lines

04/23/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Florida Marlins aim for their third straight victory when they welcome the Atlanta Braves to Dolphin Stadium this evening for the start of three-game series.

The Marlins have won two straight since a six-game losing streak, including Sunday's 12-6 rout of Washington. Dan Uggla homered twice and knocked in a career-high six runs to pace Florida's victory.

Miguel Cabrera belted a home run and Uggla finished with three hits for the Marlins, who improved to 2-3 on their current eight-game homestand. Josh Willingham added a two-run homer for Florida.

Marlins starter Wes Obermueller (1-0) went six-plus innings, yielding two runs on four hits and four walks, while striking out five. Kevin Gregg picked up his first save of the season despite allowing four runs in three innings of relief.

Left-hander Dontrelle Willis takes the mound for Florida this evening. Willis won his first three starts of the season, including a victory over the Braves on April 13, before suffering his first setback of the year Wednesday against the Mets. In that outing, the lefty was rocked for eight runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits in a season-low five innings of work.

Willis was effective when he faced the Braves earlier this season, as he gave up three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. He is 5-4 with a 4.72 earned run average in 15 career starts against Atlanta and has won his last three starts against the Braves.

The Braves will put the ball in the hands of right-hander Kyle Davies, who has yet to post a decision through two starts so far this season. After allowing two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings in his first outing, Davis was touched for four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 frames last Wednesday against the Cubs.

Davis is 0-2 in five appearances against the Marlins, with three of those being starts. He has a high 9.22 earned run average over that span, having allowed 14 runs over just 13 2/3 innings.

Atlanta also comes into the game on a winning note, and in first place of the NL East, after topping the New York Mets by a 9-6 count in their rubber match at Shea Stadium.

Kelly Johnson homered twice, including a three-run shot in the eighth inning that put the Braves ahead for good, for his first career two-homer game.

Johnson finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored for Atlanta, which has won four of six. Edgar Renteria hit a three-run homer and Jeff Francoeur had a two-run single.

Braves starter John Smoltz did not factor in the decision. He allowed six runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out three. Ex-Met Tyler Yates (1-0) pitched a perfect seventh for the win, while Bob Wickman picked up his sixth save in as many chances with a scoreless ninth.

The Braves continue their nine-game road trip with this series and bring an impressive 6-2 away mark into tonight's game.

Florida and Atlanta split a weather-shortened two-game series at Turner Field earlier in the season. The Braves won 11 of their 19 matchups with the Marlins last season, though the Marlins took five of nine at home.

SPORTS BETTING

NFL Football Betting Online

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.

It is called the "pointspread."

Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.

But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.

A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.

In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.

The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .
