Orioles disable Uehara, Simon; recall Mata, Castillo

05/25/2010 - Baltimore, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Baltimore Orioles have placed pitchers Alfredo Simon and Koji Uehara on the 15-day disabled list, recalled pitcher Alberto Castillo from Triple-A Norfolk and selected the contract of pitcher Frank Mata from Norfolk.

Uehara is sidelined with a strained right elbow. He has appeared in six games this season and has no record with a 1.80 earned-run average in five innings.

The 25-year-old Uehara made 12 starts for Baltimore last season and did not pitch after June 23 because of right elbow tendinitis.

Simon suffered a strained left hamstring running to cover first base in the 10th inning of the Orioles loss to Washington on Sunday.

He had stepped into the closer's role after injuries to Mike Gonzalez and Jim Johnson and converted six out of seven save chances. Simon is 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA in 12 relief outings this season.

Mata was 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA and eight saves in 18 appearances for Norfolk.

Castillo has made nine relief outings for Baltimore this season and is 1-0 with a 12.79 ERA. He had just been sent back to the minor leagues on Friday.

The Orioles also transferred Gonzalez from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Mata on the 40-man roster.
