Santana's arm, bat lead Mets past Reds

Baseball Betting Lines

07/06/2010 - Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Johan Santana pitched a brilliant three-hit shutout and also hit the first home run of his career to lead the New York Mets to a 3-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field.

Santana (6-5), who had lost three of his last four decisions, struck out five and issued three walks for the Mets, who evened this three-game series after losing Monday's opener and in the process evened their record in July to 3-3. Jason Bay's two-run single helped pace the New York offense.

Matt Maloney (0-1) was recalled from Triple-A Louisville for the start and suffered the loss after he allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. Aaron Harang was scheduled to start, but was instead placed on the 15-day disabled list due to lower back pain. The Reds lost for only the second time in their last seven games overall.

After Brandon Phillips doubled to start the game, Santana did not allow another base hit until the sixth inning. In the interim, his solo home run that hit the pole in right field gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the third.

In the top of the sixth, Orlando Cabrera's two-out single preceded a walk to Joey Votto, but Scott Rolen flied out to center field to end the scoring threat.

The Mets scored twice in the bottom of the stanza for a three-run cushion. Leadoff batter Jose Reyes bunted his way to first base before David Wright drew a one-out intentional walk. A groundout to the right side of the infield by Ike Davis allowed both runners to move ahead one base, and Bay's single to center made it 3-0.

Santana pitched a 1-2-3 seventh and worked around a one-out walk in the eighth before the top of the ninth was a bit shaky. Rolen singled to shallow left field with one out, and an error by Bay allowed Jay Bruce to reach first base. However, Jonny Gomes lined out and Drew Stubbs grounded out to end the game.

Game Notes

It was the seventh career shutout and 10th complete game for Santana, who lowered his 2010 earned run average to 3.15 and threw 113 pitches (78 strikes)...Reyes was the only player on either team with more than one hit...The scheduled pitching matchup for Wednesday's series finale is set to feature New York southpaw Jon Niese against Bronson Arroyo...Harang's DL placement is retroactive to July 1.
