Young stars ready to emerge for U.S. men

06/06/2007 - Carson, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Coach Bob Bradley used five starters and a number of subs with almost no national team experience when the United States played it final tune-up for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which starts this week.

If their play in a 4-1 win against China is any indication, the U.S. is easily the favorite to defend its Gold Cup title. If those younger players continue to progress in the upcoming years, a move back up in the World rankings should also follow.

Jonathan Bornstein, Michael Bradley, Benny Feilhaber and Jonathan Spector all started in Saturday's win over China and are on the roster for the Gold Cup. Spector is the most experienced on the international level with six caps.

"The Gold Cup is a huge tournament for us, and my goal is obviously to try to be playing and show well so I can cement a spot on the national team," said Feilhaber, a midfielder who had a goal and an assist against China. "I think a lot of the younger players are trying to do that. Thats what you want to try to be involved in."

Sacha Kljestan also started against China - although he's not on the roster for the Gold Cup - to earn his fist international cap. Substitutes Kaman Hill, Charlie Davis and Lee Nguyen also played against China, earning their first caps.

"All four of are players that are Olympic age as well ... players that we think have shown with their club teams that they are capable of helping the Olympic team and the full national team," Bradley said. "Anytime you have a full week of training its a good chance for them to settle in. They all did a good job throughout the week and it was nice to get them their first caps."

Six other players on the Gold Cup roster have played in three or fewer games for the U.S., including New England Revolution defender Michael Parkhurst - who hasn't played yet.

In addition to the youth movement, Tim Howard is set to take over full-time in goal for Kasey Keller, who is the United States' active leader in appearances with 98.

While those inexperienced players are the future of U.S. soccer, it's unclear how many of them will play in the Gold Cup, and just how much time they will see.

Bradley could rely on plenty of veteran talent, including DeMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan. Both are just 25, but have a combined 152 appearances with the national team.

But it's obvious Bradley is gearing the team toward the future with only seven players - Carlos Bocanegra, Brian Ching, Jay DeMerit, Frankie Hejduk, Howard, Pablo Mastroeni and Steve Ralston - born before 1980.

The United States opens play in the tournament on Thursday against Guatemala at 9 p.m. at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The teams played to a scoreless draw in a friendly in late March.

The U.S. continues group stage play with games against Trinidad & Tobago on June 9 at the Home Depot Center and El Salvador on June 12 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

The quarterfinals of the tournament are June 16-17, the semifinals are June 21 and the championship is June 24.

A title could help the U.S. - which ranked in the top 10 in the world prior to the 2006 World Cup - improve its current ranking from 29th in the world.

Michael Vick is back, Brett Favre isn't and the NFC East remains the best division in the NFC, maybe in all of football.

As players start to gather for the start of another season, some things change and some stay the same in the world of the NFL.

Bet 2010 Super Bowl Odds

The NFC East has been the dominant division in the National Conference for a while, despite limited playoff success, save for the New York Giants surprise Super Bowl win two seasons ago.

Hell, there's a generation of kids in Texas who have never seen the Cowboys win a playoff game (last win was in 1996).

But collectively, the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins (well, maybe not so much the Redskins) are as good as a division gets in an NFC conference that has struggled to stay competitive with the AFC side.

Sports bettors have both acknowledged the NFC East's dominance, as one glance at the NFL future odds menu will show.

Looking over the NFL betting odds at online sports book MySportsbook.com we see the top three teams listed to win the NFC Championship are all from the NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys - 7 - 1

Philadelphia Eagles - 13 - 2

New York Giants - 9 - 2

Slotting in behind these three are two teams from the NFC North: the Minnesota Vikings (15-2) and the Chicago Bears (10-1).

Again, despite the lack of recent playoff success, the Dallas Cowboys are popular with the sports betting community, as they hold 14% of all the money wagered on who will win the NFC Championship.

So far, the New York Giants are the bettors' favorite to represent their conference in the Super Bowl, as they have 24% of the overall NFC Championship betting volume.

And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? For the most part, the Eagles had a very productive offseason, the kind that could bring them back to the top.

They had a good draft adding the likes of WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy.

Unfortunately, the team received a blow when long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away on Tuesday.

But this team will make a real run at the division title this year. Going into the regular season, Philly is listed at +240 to win the division.

Last season the Eagles were 9-6-1 SU and 10-6 ATS.

Teams from the NFC East will play teams from the AFC West in the regular season and the Eagles haven't really been a good bet in the last 20 games against the likes of San Diego, Oakland, K.C. and Denver, only going 8-12 ATS.

Two seasons removed from that Super Bowl title, the New York Giants see themselves listed as the odds-on favorite in NFC East championship futures at +162.

Plaxico Burress is gone and with him all the bad publicity surrounding the gun in the sweatpants incident, but can they replace him in the offense?

Last season the Giants were a very reliable bet going 12-4 ATS.

In the Giants' last 20 games against fellow teams from the NFC East; they are 13-7 ATS.

Dallas is listed at +240 to win the division.

Dallas went 9-7 SU and 7-9 ATS last season and with the amount of talent the Cowboys have, a similar performance won't do.

The Cowboys have been atrocious against divisional rivals, going 6-14 ATS in their last 20.

The Washington Redskins are longshots to win the division at +550.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.

NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.

Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.

Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
